Maconnais

France - Maconnais

Mâconnais is a specific region within Burgundy, lying to the south of Cote d’Or and north of Beaujolais. It is best known for its white wines.

Mâconnais vineyards cover around 7000ha, the limestone hills extend over some 40 km from the Côte Chalonnaise to the Rock of Solutré and are bordered on one side by the river Saône and the Grosne on the other. On these rolling hills vineyards are interspersed with land used for livestock and arable farming. Climate also differs from Cote d’Or with more sun, less rain and little frost.

Vinification is very similar to that of white burgundy to the north (though somewhat less use of oak); the Chardonnay grapes grown here make full, fine wines bridging the gap in both quality and price between Burgundy and the south of France.

There are three premium districts within Mâconnais: the most famous Pouilly-Fuissé (incorporating Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles), Saint-Véran, and Viré-Clessé (created from the former Mâcon-Viré and Mâcon-Clessé).
