Lazio is a ‘Central’ wine region bordering Tuscany, Umbria and Marche to the north, Abruzzo to the east and Campania to the south. The region is mainly flat and hilly, with small mountainous areas in the most eastern and southern districts.
Most of its wine production is concentrated in the hills south east of Rome whose height, along with the westerly sea breezes, help moderate the heat of the plains.
Wines are based on Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes, Frascati being the best known area. Frascati town’s terracotta-tiled roofs climb steadily from 850ft to 1200ft (260m to 365m) into the northern most hills -on a clear day, from the vineyards, Rome is visible on the plain below.
