France - Côtes de Gascogne

The Côtes de Gascogne is a wine region in the south-west of France mainly located within the department of the Gers. Gascony itself does not have defined geographical borders but historically it covers a large area to the south of Bordeaux comprising the French departments of the Gers, the Landes and the Hautes Pyrénées.

Two thirds of the vineyards in Gers, nearly 12,000 ha, are used for the production of the Côtes de Gascogne wines – over 90% of production is white wine, unusual in a region that is predominantly a supplier of reds.

The Appellation d’origine contrôlée was in extended in 2005 to take in areas of Armagnac and increasing the areas of vineyards to 15,000 ha.
