Italy - Abruzzo

Abruzzo (Abruzzi) is an Italian wine region located in the mountainous central Italian region of Abruzzo along the Adriatic Sea. It is bordered by the Molise wine region to the south, Marche to the north and Lazio to the west.

It lies at the same latitude as Rome, to the east, and contains the highest peaks of the Apennines up to 3,000m altitude. Although it is not a big wine area in hectares, a lot of wine is produced here. For a long time a lot of mass wine was produced. This is changing rapidly as a leading wine producers invest in this area.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (from the Monepulciano grape and Abruzzo region) must not be confused with the renowned Tuscan DOCG Montepulciano – which comes from the village Montepulciano and is made of the Sangiovese grape.

Abruzzo’s rugged terrain, 65% of which is mountainous, help to isolate the region from the winemaking influence of the ancient Romans and Etruscans in Tuscany but the area has had a long history of wine production.

There are variable weather conditions, sometimes harsh and cold winds from the northeast (the bora), or the hot wind from the southeast (called the scirocco).
