Veneto in the North East is the home of some of Italy's most famous names - Soave, Valpolicella, Bardolino - but also the region growing international varietals: notably Chardonnay and Merlot as well as the all embracing Pinot Grigio.
Casa Bennati is an old established house, founded at the beginning of the last century, based in the area of Cazzano di Tramigna in Veneto. In this viniculture heartland, a few kilometres north of Soave, their vineyards are in a prime position and are protected by the surrounding hills. High quality is assured by astute management and hand-picking is still carried out with optimum care and attention.
In the early years the company restricted its activity to producing esteemed local wines, specifically the ageing of Amarone and Recioto della Valpolicella - which are still the flagship wines of the range. Subsequently, under the winemaking direction of a younger generation of the family, Bennati has extended its interest to wines from surrounding areas, concentrating on regional character and the quality of varietals.
Casa Bennati:
We list two single varietals - Chardonnay and Merlot - under the 'Rocca Bastia' house wine label plus Pinot Grigio in the more up-market 'I Gadi' and 'Corte Pitora' ranges which also include the classic red Veneto wines of Valpolicella and Bardolino. Bardolino 'La Quercia' rosé wine is a Chiaretto - a very light red wine, by tradition made from the best grapes of the vintage.
The premium 'Soraighe' range provides these fine wines. Soave 'Libet' (cleverly from the Latin meaning 'pleasant', cunningly also meaning 'suave') is a stunning version of this much maligned wine. A full flavoured Lugana with plenty of lees contact and a short time in oak. Niveus is a Sauvignon/Garganega blend with delicate herbal and soft fruit notes. Gadum is 100% Cabernet and has intense fruit and subtle oak whilst Ireos is a Valpolicella blend with the addition of Cabernet and Pinot Noir and one year in oak that will age for 10-12 years.
A rich, smooth and full Ripasso is made by the classic ripasso method and then finished in 30 hectolitre chestnut and oak casks. This has created a rounded wine of medium/full intensity with hints of vanilla alongside velvety fruit. The Amarone 'Elite' is a fine example of this bitter-sweet wine; slightly restrained style and firmly structured with concentrated fruit and a distinctive smokey and plummy finish. Cerasum is Bennati's superb top of the range made from the best grapes of the vintage.
