MORGENROT TUSCANY

Tuscany is a major region around Florence and Sienna. Historically best known for Chianti - produced in a variety of styles - it has latterly seen the rise of innovative winemaking of 'Super-Tuscans' such as Maritato.

Tiberini has been a family run business since 1896. Now run by brothers Luca and Fabio Tiberini their belief is that traditional techniques produce great wines and as such are keen to both employ and preserve many old wine making methods. Their Le Caggiole estate has over 22 hectares of land in the district of Montepulciano an area renowned for its production of prestigious wines and olive oils. Of the estate, 13.5 ha are vineyards of specialised cultivation. The soil is tufaceous light limestone and clay, situated at 300 - 320 meters above sea level with a West South West aspect. The vineyards are tended with minimum manipulation and are left to their natural development.

Poggio ai Mandorli are based half way between Firenze and Greve. At around 350m above sea level the 52 ha estate includes 15 ha of Classico DOCG vineyards and 20 ha of olive groves with the remainder given over to woodland. Holiday accommodation, in a farm house, is available on the estate.

Azienda AgricolaTiberini:

Chianti Le Caggiole, is made from 80% Prugnolo Gentile, 15% Canaiolo Nero, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks with frequent pumping over and light pressing. The wine is then aged for various lengths of time in 500 ltr and 25 hl French and Slavonian oak barrels. The result is a Chianti that blends the traditional character of the southern Siena hills with the more robust structure of wines from Montepulciano.

Tenuta Poggio ai Mandorli:

Chianti Classico Mandori is composed mainly of Sangiovese with a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown on the estate. It then has a short period of ageing in oak casks. It is an old style robust wine with an intense ruby colour and a restrained bouquet that opens up after time to reveal oaky spice. Its structured palate with woody herbal flavours over plum fruit retains prominent tannins on the finish.
