Sicily is Italy's up and coming wine region producing interesting whites and sturdy reds often from grape varietals grown on the island and no-where else. More experimental wines are being made outside of the DOC regulations.
Maggio Vini founded half a century ago are an established family of winemakers owning 20 ha of vines. They are located in Cerasuolo di Vittoria - the top wine growing area of Sicily famous for its ancient origins and long winemaking tradition, considered a 'pearl' among Sicilian wines.
Massimo and Barbara Maggio have a true love for the land; their passion for wine is evidenced by their continual research into the soil composition of the vineyards, the planting and tending of vines and then selecting the best grapes for producing quality fine wines. They are proud to restrict production to the traditional grapes of the region and place a great emphasis on authenticity and style.
Maggio Vini:
Colori di Inverno, from Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOC, is made of 50% Nero d'Avola and 50% Frappato from 20-25 year old low yielding vines grown in red sandy soil 200m above sea level. The wine has 15 days with the marc, 12 months ageing in steel tanks. The resulting wine, whilst being unoaked, is full, well structured and complex with a hearty warming character redolent of its name “Winter Colours”.
