Salta in the far north of the country lays claim to having the world's highest vineyards. Vines are currently being planted at around 3,000m (10,000ft), although not everywhere at such extremes. Malbec and especially Torrontes seem to thrive at this altitude.
Bodegas Cruz de Piedra, initially known as Bodega San Telmo, was founded in 1973 by Sigifredo Alonso and has pioneered single varietal wines in Argentina. The vines, at just over 30 years old, are in their prime, lending great depth and complexity to the wines. Their style, initially influenced by Sigifredos time spent with Californian winemakers, has a balance of old and new world character, an outlook also refected in the modernist Mediterranean architecture of the winery.
Bodegas Cruz de Piedra:
Tiasta (the name taken from that which the native Hauarpe people originally gave to the Maipu region) provides an unoaked Torrontes from Salta in the north, regarded as the best growing area for this grape.
