Penedes, to the south of Barcelona, is the region of Spain best identified with Cava but is also the area that has pioneered the planting of non-Spanish varietals. The success had been in retaining an intrinsically Spanish feel to the wines - or rather a Catalan influence. No more so than with the rosé wines - the preferred wine drunk by the local community - deep and full flavoured and very versatile with tapas food.
Loxarel is the brand name for a 4th generation family owned estate based at Masia Can Mayol in Penedes. Their range of predominantly organic and bio-dynamic certified wines successfully mix modern experimentation with tradition. Highlighting their concern for the environment the main labels take their names from the Goddesses of earth and fertility in Greek and Roman mythology. Loxarel's 50 ha of vineyards, located high in the mountains, are structured around environmentally friendly production not just organic cultivation - for example a decreasing use of tractors and mechanisation, whilst letting goats and sheep graze in the vineyards in preference to weeding. The vines have a minimal treatment of organic fertiliser once every three to four years with a determination to not over work the soil. Thus production is of high quality, low yields and an utmost respect for the land. All their wines are bottled unfiltered and are suitable for vegetarians.
Bodegas Masia Can Mayol:
Cora - Light straw colour with the flowery aromas of rose petal and honeysuckle from the Muscat. Medium weight; there is good balance of fruit and acidity making for a clean fresh finish.
Gaia - Being kept on the lees for 15-20 days with daily stirring results in a Sauvignon of slightly different character; powerful, perfumed aroma with a fuller palate of tropical fruits and rounder finish.
Petit Arnau - Intense, dark coloured rose - typical of the preferred style of the region for drinking with tapas foods.
Gal - Late harvested from selected vineyards to achieve the maximum in fruit concentration. Deep colour and aromas. Bronze Medal, Decanter 2010
Ops - Bio-dynamic farming. The Merlot is aged for 6 months in oak before being blended to create a modern easy drinking wine packed with fruit flavours.
Eos - Bio-dynamic farming. Grown on small terraces high in the mountains (700m) surrounded by pines and evergreen oak. Delightfully long and spicy Syrah style. Limited production.
