Westend Estate was established in 1945 in Griffith, NSW and is still run by the founding family. They are consistant winners of medals and awards in international tastings.
Hilltops is an exciting cool climate region noted for its minerally whites and complex reds.
Philip Shaw purchased and started planting his Koomooloo
vineyard, situated in the Orange Region, in 1988. With 47 ha at around 900m it is one of the
highest in Australia. We have selected 5 wines from his ‘Character
Series’ - all 100% varietals made only from his own grapes.
Orange is a cool climate region between Cowra and Mudgee in NSW. The area has a long history of fruit growing but
development of the wine industry didnt begin until the early 1980s. Favourable factors such as soil, geology, climate and
temperature help produce wines of distinct colour and flavour. Philip Shaw’s certainly reflect the latter.
Westend Estate:
The Poker Face blends from Riverina live up to their billing of “a full house (we’re
not bluffing)”with plenty of fruit character and are great value - both getting 86 points from Parker.
Westend Richland Viognier is a fine varietal example: fragrant nose of apricot, full palate and rich finish.
Westend Hilltops Riesling is aromatic with concentrated lime flavours that has pleased Parker who scored it
90 points.
Westend Hilltops Shiraz has planty of berried fruit that is finished off with spice and integrated oak.
Philip Shaw:
Dreamer Viognier - a short time in oak has toned down the high aromatics,
but it still retains a fresh vibrancy and exciting palate.
Architect Chardonnay - Chardonnay is the established varietal in Orange: time on the lees
and in barrel has created subtle elegant texture rather than forceful fruit.
Conductor Merlot - has stunning depth of colour and a strong varietal profile
dominating the vanilla from the 15 months spent in oak.
Idiot Shiraz - Rhone style with herbal pepper and spice, dark berried
fruit and with 15 months barrel ageing, a smooth savoury finish.
Wirewalker Pinot- 12 months in French and American oak, but the purity of
fruit is dominant throughout its light-medium palate.
