Tohu is unique in being New Zealand's only Maori owned and controlled wine company. It is the result of a partnership between two Trusts and an investment company, incorporating the winery and an expanding number of vineyards, and is a successful and outstanding example of native enterprise.
Keen to acknowledge their history, Maori culture features heavily in the brand with distinctive labels drawn from their heritage.
Ribbonwood lies in the heart of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley. Located just north of the Renwick township on Conders Bend Road, the15 year old vines are planted on an unusual east-west direction, the resulting shade on the south side of each row produces more herbaceous fruit than other sites in Marlborough. The fruit from this vineyard, and that from carefully selected sites nearby, is essential for producing the expressive aromatic and vibrant flavours of the wine.
The winery name, and image on the label, is New Zealand's tallest native deciduous tree - the Lowland Ribbonwood (Plagianthus betulinus) which has attractive flowers and is often found on riverbanks and at the edge of forests. Over the last 10 years more than 1,000 native shrubs and trees have been planted to enhance both the winery’s wastewater treatment processes and the biodiversity of the vineyard. Packaging is light-weight bottles and recycled cartons, further reducing carbon footprint. Since vintage 2009 Ribbonwood has been accredited for achieving 100% environmentally sustainable vineyard and winery practices.
Penny Lane Sauvignon Blanc has prominent asparagus aromas and a full palate that displays forceful gooseberry and lime flavours.
Tohu Sauvignon Blanc is harvested from the Awatere and Wairau Valleys in Marlborough. The juice was cold fermented in stainless steel at low temperature with selected yeast strains to preserve the inherent fruit flavours. This is a medium bodied Sauvignon Blanc with fragrant aromas of flowers and passion fruit.
