R H Phillips pioneered night harvesting in 1983 during a very warm harvest. To combat the 100 plus
degree heat during the day, the winery experimented with picking grapes during the cool nighttime hours. Taping uorescent lights to
an old tomato cart in the vineyards so that the pickers could see the grapes, the winemaking team discovered that night harvesting is the
natural way to keep the fruit cool and retain the grapes’ fresh avors and crisp acidity.
