Bordeaux is renowned for its claret, but the white and rosé wines produced there should not be overlooked. Though, to concentrate on their reds, Bordeaux AC & Superieur are light wines with good structure for early drinking. The Cabernet grapes have greater prominence in Medoc and Graves giving a more earthy drinking style than the more plumy, earlier maturing, Merlot dominated blends of St Emilion and Pomerol.
Owner of Ch Anniche, Michel Pion's family have been based in the village of Haux since Napoleonic times. The 72 ha of the 80 ha estate is planted with vines which include nearly all the major varietals of Bordeaux. Marrying tradition with modernity, vinification is carried out in a new winery with temperature controlled stainless-steel vats and oak barrels for ageing. In keeping with their principles of sustainable viticulture to maintain biodiversity, and aware of the decimation of the bee population, Ch Anniche have installed their first three beehives, nestling between the vines and acacia trees.
Bordeaux:
Ch Anniche Blanc - is made from 75% Semillon, 25% Sauvignon grapes that are fined, filtered and bottled as soon as possible to maximise freshness. Medium weight with good Semillon character of citrus and grapefruit notes followed by developing floral highlights.
Ch Lalande-Meric Rosé - is a 50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It is bottled in the winter following the harvest to preserve fruit and freshness - giving an attractive raspberry style.
Ch Anniche Rouge - is another 50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It is vinified with at least 15 days skin contact and a daily pumping over; with a precisely controlled fermentation at 30°C to achieve concentrated colour and intense aromas before fining. Kept for 18 months before release, is a rounded, fruity style of claret; medium bodied with a minty blackcurrant character.
Ch Haut Roquefort - is a Sauternes style dessert wine from Cadillac - a small and recent appellation in the Premier Cotes de Bordeaux region. It is 100% Semillon from 2 ha of vineyards where some of the vines are over 100 years old. The wine has a bright golden colour and an aromatic candied fruit bouquet.
