The Ardeche is situated in the South East of France where the famous 'Mistral' wind starts. Bordering the west of the Rhone, has a long history of wine production, vines having been introduced there by the Romans. In the 1960s substantial government grants encouraged the returning 'pied noirs' of Algeria to replant the vineyards. The harsh stony soils of the area are extremely fertile, allowing annual production to meet current demand without compromising quality.
Vignerons Ardechois - UVICA - is a co-operative situated near Ruoms on the right bank of the Rhone, west of Montelimar between Lyon and Avignon. Formed over 30 years ago it has bought together 23 smaller co-operatives from 23 villages. It is the largest single wine producer in the Rhone, representing 3,000 growers with 8,500 ha of vineyards. Annual production is over 500,000 hectolitres - mainly varietal IGP Ardeche (formally Vin de Pays des Coteaux de l'Ardeche) but also AOC wines of Cotes du Rhone, Coteaux du Tricastin and Cotes du Vivarias. EU funding and a growing awareness of modern vinification techniques have encouraged the Co-ops to invest in state of the art technology, actions from which they have clearly benefitted.
Vignerons Ardéchois:
Bottled twice yearly, Les Terrasses are well balanced blends, all showing good varietal character; very accessible and easy drinking.
Les Terrasses White - Grenache / Sauvignon An excellent combination of the regional Grenache grape which gives the wine its backbone and structure and blended with Sauvignon Blanc to add freshness. Combined the wine has a refreshing crispness and tropical fruit flavours with citrus overtones of lime.
Les Terasses Red - Merlot / Grenache Medium bodied red which has tremendous weight and firmness in the mouth, the nose has raspberry and red fruit flavours generated from the merlot grape. Overall the wine is very accessible and is excellent drinking for a wine so young.
Les Terrasses Rose - Syrah / Grenache Lovely salmon pink colour is matched by the wonderful fullness on the nose, displaying soft berries and aromas of both candy and raspberry. The palate is medium with a natural sweetness adding to the enjoyment.
